Installation instructions

There are two sets of instructions here. You may want to print these instructions.
The first set tells how to install GRANDMA data files for Brother's Keeper.
The second set tells how to install gedcom files (such as EWZ) for Brother's Keeper.
(If you are installing the gedcom file for another program such as Legacy, or Family Tree Maker, follow instructions for that program.)

Set 1: Installing the GRANDMA data files in Windows:†
A. Start Brotherís Keeper. From the Menu bar at the top of the screen, choose File, Open data bases. † From the white box in the bottom center of the screen, type GM18-03 , then click on Create.

B. The bottom line of the Brotherís Keeper screen should display:†
† † † † † † † † † † † Names: 0 † †Families 0

C. From the Menu bar at the top of the screen, click File, Restore data files.

D. On the next screen, click Pick a different drive. Brotherís Keeper will ask you to specify the drive and folder where the data files have been saved.
†1. When asked to specify a drive letter, choose C:†
†2. When asked to pick a folder, you will need to double click on each of the following folders:†
†a. C:†
†b. Users†
†c. [your user name]†
†d. Downloads†

E. On the next screen, click on Restore from C:\users\[your user name]\downloads.
A list of file names will appear. Click on the Restore box. The data files will be loaded onto your hard disk. This process will take many minutes. File names will be added to the list on the screen as each data file is loaded.†

F. When the file loading process is completed, you will be asked if you have another diskette that contains text or picture files. Click on Cancel. The next box notifies you that files have been restored. Click on OK.†

G. The bottom line of the Brotherís Keeper screen should read:†
†Names: 1380342† † Families 439619†

†The GM18-03 data files have loaded successfully and are ready for use.

H. If you have loaded a BK7 database, it must be reindexed.

Start BK7, Go to the Main page, File, Open Database, browse to the location of the database and click OK.

You will get a message that the person index file is missing. Please reindex the file. Click OK to close the box. Click on Index data files and wait for completion. The files are ready to go


Set 2: Installing a gedcom file for Brother's Keeper
A. Start Brotherís Keeper. From the Menu bar at the top of the screen, choose File, Open data bases. From the white box in the bottom center of the screen, type EWZ17-01 , then click on Create.

B. The bottom line of the Brotherís Keeper screen should display:
† † † † † † † † † † Names: 0 † † Families 0

C. From the Menu bar at the top of the screen, click File, Gedcom, Import, click OK.

D. On the next screen, Brotherís Keeper will ask you to specify the drive and folder where the gedcom file has been saved.
1. When asked to specify a drive letter, choose C:
2. When asked to pick a folder, you will need to double click on each of the following folders:
a. C:
b. Users
c. [your user name]
d. Downloads

E. On the next screen, click on EWZ17-01, then click OK, Open.
† † This process will take many minutes.Then click OK

F. The bottom line of the Brotherís Keeper screen should read:
Names: 81215 † †Families 14137

The EWZ17-01 data files have loaded successfully and are ready for use.
